The Story of the Cottage

I considered putting this on my About Me page but I want this to have it’s own separate page to really go in depth. Since I can’t share the life experience I have had here in person I have wrote up a small description of what this property and house means to me.

This page is mostly just me writing about my love for the seasons and the weather, it may not be for everyone, but I really hope you enjoy it.

My husband, James, and I were young and dating in San Jose, CA where we worked unimportant jobs and fell in love. After dating for almost 2 years we drove north to visit his family home…You know the home…the home that has been in the family for decades, the home where the family travels for every holiday. It’s the most beautiful home filled with loved ones. The first time we came up here together was for Christmas. I fell in love instantly. Acreage, trees, chickens, long driveways, character.

We noticed the house next door; a house where my husband had played in their pond decades ago, catching fish with the neighbor kid; was vacant.

We reached out to the owner, found out he had never even spent a single night in the house since he bought it 5 years prior. (People with money, am I right? =P)

Anyways! After 6 months of negotiating we moved in. We moved out of a house we were sharing with 3 other couples in the crammed city of San Jose, CA to our own house seated directly in the middle of 10 usable, beautiful acres. I was speechless to say the least. It was more than I could have dreamed of.

Fast forward 5 years..by now we both had steady jobs in the area, had a Cattahoula Leopard dog from the local shelter and 2 kitties.

In 2015, James proposed to me on our porch while it was pouring rain with a beautiful ring. Of course I said yes!

In 2017, we finally got married! We had bought my first brand new car. We bought the house. Last day of the year we bought The Cottage. It’s hard to deny that where we are is just the right place. Every step since moving up here has been a blessing.

That’s the story of how we ended up here.. Now, more about the property itself..

The cottage overlooks the acre pond, where the frogs lay on the bank and sing their song all thru the summer nights, alongside the crickets.

After a long, hot summer, the crisp Fall air creeps in, brings turkeys ducks, and the garden’s harvest. We watch as the leaves fall in an array of colors and sizes, blanketing the ground in reds, yellows and greens.

The winds grow colder as we enter Winter making the trees bare and the days short. The rain comes to fill in the seasonal creeks from the highest point down thru the overfilled pond, creating a stream that wraps around the pond creating an amazing green landscape.

Some winters, something special happens..snow comes trickling down from the sky in light, white, puffy pieces. You’re reminded what real silence is while the snow falls on all the trees and covers the landscape. By the end of the cold season the grass is green and lush and you think the ground can’t gain one more ounce of beauty.

Then spring appears to completely prove that theory wrong. The grass turns vibrate green with joy from the sun, all bald spots are filled in with green grass and small ecosystems of plants and little bugs, the daffodils, iris, hydrangea, and wildflowers appear.

Every place you look is captivating by nature’s beauty, the plum trees bloom white and pink, the pomegranate blooms in deep red and the flowers seem to know to take turns blooming for your enjoyment.

The deer grow their antlers and wander around with their little bambis, rabbits run rampant all thru the fields. As the days grow warmer we get to start all over again.

This is where I live, this this why this blog is named after and dedicated to our Cottage. Our house, our home, our land, my little Cottage on the Hill.
